Hey Jonathan. I agree with Kenny. We are a debt settlement company. We negotiate with many creditors and agree that time is a critical in this business. Although, many lenders now a days are wanting to settle almost immediately, they do not want to pass the opportunity and get paid once we contact them the first time. Thank you for your blog

Hi Jonathan. Great article. I've been keeping up with your blog even after writing my book just to see other viewpoints and yours are always helpful. I'm actually currently in negotiations with one of my final creditors. (As you know, I started off with seven accounts, settled five and am down to two.) I have a $21,000 balance. I initially offered 20% and they countered at 70%. I let it sit another month and this morning they came down to 40%. $8500 on a $21,000 balance. Patience is the key and you're right, it is so much easier to deal with one at a time instead of many. Keep up the good advice for people. Talk to you soon, Kenny

[...] Too many of my bankruptcy clients tried to avoid bankruptcy by working with a “Debt Settlement Company”. Only after they paid out thousands of dollars, saw their credit scores plummet, and got served with lawsuits, did they come to see me about bankruptcy. Much has been written about the dangers of working with Debt Settlement companies, most recently by my friend Jonathan Ginsberg in Atlanta at http://www.thebklawyer.com/thebkblog/2009/06/21/debt-settlement-vs-bankruptcy/.
